Talent Newsletter

I am proud to announce our Veterans for Talent coalition, which we kicked off this past weekend with events in Columbia, St. Joseph and Springfield. I'm so pleased to have received the support of veterans across Missouri and I'm honored by the trust they have placed in me. With the support of Missouri veterans I'm confident we can continue to make certain that Washington serves the veterans who served us so well.

While I've been working hard for our nation's veterans, Claire McCaskill continues to show that she doesn't believe in the common sense, conservative values of Missouri. She says flag burning "isn't a problem." She opposes my bipartisan legislation to protect veterans from predatory lenders. On top of that, McCaskill insists that U.S. intelligence officials who listen to terrorist phone calls are breaking the law. I disagree. If al-Qaeda is calling someone in the U.S., I want our intelligence officials to know what they are talking about.
During our kickoff this past weekend I highlighted a number of important issues I've been working on in the Senate including:
Military Health Care - In the Senate I sponsored bipartisan military health care legislation, now law, to address a major issue that arose after the first Gulf War in which some troops returned home with symptoms of an illness commonly referred to as Gulf War illness.

Protecting our servicemen and women from predatory lenders - This bill I sponsored would limit the amount that payday lenders can charge soldiers and their families for a loan.

Increasing funding for our military - As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee I understand how important it is to provide our troops with the tools they need to win the War on Terror. That's why I've fought for years for increases in defense spending including an additional $6.7 billion for defense this past spring.

Protecting the flag - I believe we need to protect the American Flag from public desecration. I'm an original cosponsor to the Flag Desecration Resolution.

Keeping America's commitments to our veterans - We need to keep our commitments to the veterans who have fought for our nation. That's why I have supported billions of dollars in funding increases for veterans health care.
If you're a veteran, please take a moment today to visit the Veterans for Talent webpage and join our coalition . And if you know a veteran who might be interested in joining the coalition, please take a moment right now to forward this email to them and invite them to join Veterans for Talent.

Thanks, as always, for your support. With your help we'll make sure our nation remains strong in the fight against the War on Terror.

Sincerely,

Jim Talent
